SBFC SUPPORTS FA SILENT WEEKEND - 15-16TH MARCH 2025

Writer: SBFC CommitteeSBFC Committee

At Stamford Bridge Football Club, we’re always looking for ways to create a positive and supportive environment for our young footballers. That’s why we’re proud to support the FA Silent Weekend on the 15-16th March 2025, an initiative designed to let players take the lead on the pitch, free from distractions and pressures from the sidelines.

What is the FA Silent Weekend?

The Silent Weekend, led by England Football, is all about allowing young players to make their own decisions, communicate with their teammates, and enjoy the game without outside influence. For selected age groups who choose to participate, this means that coaches and spectators will be encouraged to keep verbal instructions and reactions to a minimum during matches.

Instead of the usual shouting from the sidelines, the focus will be on:

Encouraging players to think for themselves

Allowing them to problem-solve in real time

Fostering confidence and independence on the pitch

While supportive clapping and positive gestures are welcome, we’ll be asking everyone to embrace the silence and let the kids play.

Why Are We Getting Involved?

Football should be an enjoyable and safe space for young players to develop, both in their skills and confidence. Research has shown that too much instruction from the sidelines can sometimes hinder a player’s decision-making ability. By stepping back, we’re giving them the opportunity to find their own voice on the pitch and learn from the game itself.

This initiative also supports referees, many of whom are young and learning themselves, by creating a more respectful and pressure-free environment.

Who Will Be Taking Part?

At Stamford Bridge Football Club, we are inviting a number of different age groups to participate in the Silent Weekend, with teams choosing whether or not they’d like to get involved. If your team is taking part, you’ll be informed by your coach or club representative.

How Can You Support the Silent Weekend?

📢 Spectators & Parents: Encourage the players with claps and smiles rather than words! Avoid giving instructions—let the game be their teacher.

📢 Coaches: Keep verbal guidance to a minimum during the game. Focus on brief feedback at half-time or after the match.

📢 Players: Communicate with each other, make your own decisions, and enjoy playing without external pressures!

Join Us in Supporting Our Players!

The FA Silent Weekend is a great opportunity to help young footballers develop independence, confidence, and a love for the game. We’re excited to see the positive impact it will have on our players and look forward to everyone embracing this initiative.

Let’s all play our part in creating a more positive football experience for our young players. Let the kids play – and let the silence speak volumes!
